FOOD SHOPPING in WINDERMERE
Windermere Convenience Store is a small corner shop at the end of Limethwaite Road. It's very well stocked for a small corner shop with all the basics as well as fresh coffee, pastries, a few veggies, sandwiches and other items for a light meal. They also sell chargers, headphones and other items that are sometimes forgotten when packing. Open daily 7.30am-8pm
Booths. The Old Station, Victoria Street, Windermere LA23 1QA. Open 8am–9pm Mon to Sat, 9.30am–4pm Sun.
Based next to Windermere train station (handy for the toilet facilities if you’ve come by train), it’s just off the A591 main road you come off into Windermere, before descending into the actual town centre. Unlike Sainsbury’s and the Co-op which are smaller shops, it also has a carpark, including electric car charging. If you’re from the south of England, Booths is a higher-end supermarket a bit like Waitrose. The shop is spacious and the aisles are a good width.
Sainsbury’s. Main Rd, Windermere LA23 1DX. Open every day 7am-11pm.
Right in the centre of Windermere, this is a decent size for a Sainsbury’s Local; the aisles are not as wide as Booths. You can self-serve or use a cashier. Note the long opening hours - handy!
Co-op. 2 Oak Street, Windermere LA23 1EN. Open every day 7am-11pm.
Also in the centre of Windermere, it’s similar to Sainsbury’s but smaller, with narrower aisles. Also with long opening hours.
Manuka. 44 Main Rd, Windermere LA23 1DX. Open Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm. 07387 793401
A small independent health food shop, selling a range of ‘free from’ products, teas and other healthy goodies, as well as a range of supplements.
Butchers. There is a butchers on Crescent Road in the centre of Windermere.
Nearby elsewhere. There are also supermarkets down the road in Bowness including another Co-op and a Tesco. Ambleside only has a medium size Tesco and small Spar shop, whilst in Kendal (15 minutes’ drive) you have more choice: an M&S with a food store, another large Booths, Asda and Morrison’s.
Lakeland. Alexandra Buildings, Windermere LA23 1BQ. On the other side of the station from Booths, with its own carpark. Open Monday-Friday 8am-7pm; Saturday 9am-6pm; Sunday 11am-5pm
As well as an amazing array of cookery and cleaning products, there are also actual food items in Lakeland too such as cake making ingredients, herbs and seasonings, chocolates and other treats. Not cheap, but worth a visit for foodies.
