LAKE WINDERMERE

Beautiful Lake Windermere, the largest, deepest natural lake in the UK is sure to be a feature of your stay in Windermere. You will see the lake from many viewpoints locally including Orrest Head, School Knott and Brant Fell among others; check out our circular walks to all these beauty spots.

You might be surprised to find out that the town of Windermere is not directly alongside the lake, but you can still reach its shores by foot.

  • From Running Hare, you can walk to Millerground for a walk or even a dip.

  • The Promenade at Bowness-on-Windermere is a popular way to visit the lake, have a wander and get an ice-cream or drink. It's about a 15 minute walk from the house.

  • Take the scenic route to Bowness and enjoy a quieter walk by the lake at Cockshot Point, then head to Bowness Promenade and back into bustling Bowness.

  • Take a boat trip on or across the lake, with a choice of starting and finishing points with Windermere Lake Cruises.

  • You can swim in Lake Windermere and other lakes in the Lake District; to find out more about where you can go, how to keep safe and where to find a coach or group to swim with, visit the Lake District National Park page on Swimming.

  • This wonderful map of Lake Windermere depicts a range of activities that can be undertaken in different parts of the lake. There is a laminated print-out in the utility room at Running Hare.

  • There are outdoor activities centres in Windermere and Bowness offering a range of facilities, activities and tuition:
